"I should have seen it coming at me like an atom bomb." You get too literal with it here. How I see it, it's more like "I would have been able to see a big disaster on it way." Not necessarily does this mean the disaster is the same in time and result. For certain, a credit disaster isn't going to directly burn, incinerate, and kill you.
